MAKE IT PURPLE WITH PINK POLKA DOTS

The things you learn in a design firm.
I had the great fortune to work for Leslie Phinney as a designer at what was then Phinney Design way back in the 1980s (I know I’m dating myself). This was before she met Karl Bischoff. The office was in SoDo across from what is now Safeco Field where the Pyramid Brewery now resides. The Kingdome was still standing at that time and The Clink and The Safe did not exist. Neither did personal computers or desktop publishing. My how things change over the years. But — as they say — some things never change….
Even in those early years, my formative years in the branding business, what I learned from Leslie Phinney sticks with me today. I count Leslie as one of my most important mentors. I know Phinney Bischoff is still run by the same principles I learned from her so long ago. Things like listen to your clients, details matter, accept and provide nothing but the highest quality work, and have fun while you’re doing it. People matter (dogs too!). Do your best. Listen if your client requests “purple with pink polka dots” but professionally guide your client to other options that might be more appropriate. I could go on and on …
Due to an out-of-state move in 1996, I started my own graphic design/branding/marketing business in 1997. Seventeen years later with my business going gangbusters I credit Leslie Phinney with teaching me so many of the skills I need and use today as a successful business owner in this creative field. And as life goes full circle I thank her now for mentoring my son, Tyler, who attends Cornish College of the Arts (Leslie’s alma mater).
How do you sufficiently thank a person who has and continues to have such a profound influence in your life? I’m not sure, but I know her clients, team members, and folks lucky enough to be part of her world share the same gratitude that I do.
